Grouping Layers

Once you have a basic knowledge of layers, using photoshop becomes second nature, and the next stage is to look at grouping and linking layers together. We will now look at an example that uses both.

Lets suppose that we want to create a tartan butterfly. We have both the image of the tartan and the butterfly shape, but we want to combine the two so the tartan "fills" the butterfly shape.

We want to first place these elements on our page as two different layers. We then place the tartan layer directly over the butterfly layer. Go to Layer > Group with Previous and the two layers will be grouped and the tartan will fill the butterfly shape as follows:

Looking at the layer palette we can see that layer 4, the layer containing the tartan, now has a small arrow beside it symbolising that it is grouped with the layer below. Note how the two layers can still be moved about independently of each other. If we now want both layers to move when one is selected, we need to link the layers.

This is done by selecting one of the layers and checking the link box (circled red) in the other layer we want to link too.
