Stick with us folks

Many apologies for the patchy Net Resources website over the last week or so. Two reasons really:

1) Our much beloved server Arkaig, has caught a cold, and the poor dear is feeling rather unwell. Nothing that can't be fixed but certain section of the website have been down, as have student sites, and we're having to move everything to our other server. If you're a previous student and are wondering where your site is, don't worry, things could be down for a few days but we should have it up and running again soon.

2) There's never a good time for server problems, but slap bang in the middle of a relaunch has to rank as one of the worst. The new Net Resources sites is so near to completion it hurts, but it's not left much time for blogging duties I'm afraid. Still, it'll all be worth it when the shiney new site appears.

Speak of which, we've pretty much agreed to have the new site launched for the WWW2006 conference next week, and hopefully we might even have it done later on this week. We're all very excited as the new sites looks gorgeous (and I'm not just talking about the staff photos)!

Net Resources exhibiting at the WWW2006 conference

The WWW2006 is the global event to bring together the key influencers, decision makers, technologists, businesses and standards bodies shaping the future of the web. Organised by the International World Wide Web Conference Committee (IW3C2)(IW3C2) since 1994, the annual WWW Conference has played the fundamental role of gathering the trail-blazers from the international community to discuss, debate and explore how to shape and develop the future direction of the World Wide Web. It's the first time the conference has been held in the UK, so it's a great opportunity for everyone in Scotland, to get along. Net Resources will have stand, so if you going, then make sure you pop along and say hello.

The great Net Resources redesign

Things have noticeably quiet round here on the blogging front of late, but that doesn't mean we've forgotten you. Quite the opposite in fact, as we've been feaverishly beavering away on the redesign for the new Net Resources website. We try and give the old girl a bit of a face lift every year or so, but this time we've gone for a full scale redevelopment. It's going to look......different to say the least, but the changes are much more than just cosmetic, and the new site is going to have a whole bunch of new features and services. Possibly top amongst these will be our new online recruitment service. We know how many people read the jobs blog here, and we thought it was a natural extension to dip our toes into the online recruitment game. With a difference though. We're sticking to what we know best and focusing this purely and the web design, IT and internet industry, allowing web designers, freelancers and agencies access to the most up to date jobs and people in Scotland. We'll have more to tell soon, but it's going to be very interesting to say the least. Check back soon, and we might even give you some sneak previews. Just bring your sun glasses!

Net Resources feel the love!

Thanks to Emma Potter over at the Murray Stable for pointing out that The Online Journal of the Law Society of Scotland has posted a review of two of Net Resources recent sites: The Faculty of Advocates and the Murray Stable. Both reviews are very complimentary, highlighting design, usability and the focus on accessibility that we tried to achieve for both websites: About the Faculty of Adovcates website:
"The first thing that strikes the visitor on arriving at the site is that it now looks much more presentable. A tabular approach to layout means that everything is neatly ordered and a judicious use of images means that the overall effect is very attractive. The site looks busy and professional."
And about the Murray Stable:
"The site is of high quality in terms of accessibility and web standards, which is gratifying – e.g. allowing use of access keys to make it easier to navigate for users with visual or motor impairments."
The review also highlights the new Articles section of the site, where members of the Stable can submit articles for publication (under a Creative Commons License). This was a key focus for the redesign as a means of attracting repeat visitors to the site, and judging form the review it seems to be working!

AJAX Color Tool

<sarcasm>It seems like not a day goes by without another AJAX application launching that we couldn't have imagined life without.</sarcasm> Seriously though, there are some really useful things cropping up, and this Color Tool is one of them. It's got all the usual features you might expect from a colour picker: selecting a tone which shows complimentary colours and so on, but the real difference is what happens next. Once you've selected the main colours for your scheme you can drag them onto a dummy page where you can see how they fit together within a page enviroment. It's a nice feature. Check out Stef's effort, and wonder no more why we don't let him out of the Training room.

So you think you're hot with Photoshop?

So you might feel pretty smug that you can photoshop your bosses head onto Saddam Hussein's body, but that doesn't make you a Photoshop guru. Out of all the applications I've ever used it's probably got the greatest depth, and a learning curve spanning out over many years instead of months. That's why I'm still blown away by some of the top guys out there and what they can do. Case in point is Kevin Hulsey, an illustrator specialising in Technical Illustrations for cars, ships, planes and other general industrial machinary. Some of his work is just mind blowing in its scale and attention to detail, but you really have to see it to understand. Check out the Empress of the Sea Cruise Ship Cutaway for starters, and then let it sink in that it took 960 hours and about a gazillion layers to achieve the end result. You can just keep zooming in and in, and the detail just keeps getting better and better.

Free Photos!

We all love free things, and free photos, without copyright issues are a great thing when you are working on a site, be it a personal site, mockups, or just because you don't want to pay for images free is good. So when another free stock image site pops up we all say hooray (except for me, I'll just shoot my own thankyouverymuch!) So everystockphoto, welcome to the party!

Free HTML editor

I just came across this nifty little program, it is an HTML and CSS editor that has some neat little touches. Syntax highlighting (essential) tabbed tag lists (handy) and pretty lightweight. If you want an HTML editor that is a bit more user friendly than a simple text editor then you could do worse than download Alleycode. A comprehensive list of features is included. I've taken the liberty of including them below. As you can see it is pretty fully featured. Nifty!
  • Standard Windows functions such as cut, copy, paste, undo, redo, select all, clear all and wordwrap.
  • Standard Windows and Alleycode keyboard shortcuts.
  • Syntax Highlighting...Customizable syntax highlighting for HTML, XML and PHP.
  • Multiple window display. Open and or work on several pages at the same time.
  • Turf View... unusual real estate view of your project. Convenient if you a have a small screen. Turf gives you complete "right click"control over Alleycode.
  • Synchro View... See live results with new, saved or unsaved documents. Synchro view displays two way synchronized code/design location (highlight code for design reciprocal or vice versa). Huge time saver for searching large files.
  • Quick Edit... Right click enabled HTML tags for fast wizard supported updates. Covers all essential tags
  • CSS wizard make styling a breeze. Create and maintain internal or external style sheets. CSS1 and CSS2 compliant.
  • Table wizard... Makes it easy to create simple or complex tables. Includes background image, background color and border color options.
  • Optimizer wizard... Intuitive meta content preparation for search engine spiders.
  • Properties wizard... Background color and image, text and link color, margin spacing and document encoding.
  • Preview in default browser. Optionally displays with IE, Netscape or Opera.
  • Assignments... Easy access to active projects. Combine with "Display Directory Window" on startup in "Preferences" for one click access.
  • Color picker... Inserts color in hexadecimal value.
  • Anchor wizard... Link to other documents, email addresses or remote URLs.
  • Image insert with preview... Alleycode has the ability to distinguish between new or saved (as well as modified) documents and creates a system path accordingly.
  • Font wizard... HTML3.2 - 4.0 .
  • Special character display...Click'n'Insert.
  • Comprehensive frameset construction.
  • Click'n'Insert Ordered and Unordered lists.. Add lines as needed.
  • Ready made interactive forms... Click'n'Insert into your document and/or customize as needed.
  • Form bar includes quick tags insert for all standard form layout (custom).
  • Simple and functional PHP scripts to make your Web site interactive
  • Common PHP statements at the click of a button.
  • Search and find feature.
  • Full search and replace.
  • FTP access... Optionally program your favorite FTP client to open with one click!
  • Print your full page or print a selected portion of your open document only.
  • Convert complete HTML document to upper/lower case HTML tags.
  • Convert all text to upper/lower case.
  • Convert selected text to upper/lower case.
  • Comprehensive Help files includes our "Quick Start Tutorial". We'll show you how to build a (good) Web site in no time with clean HTML and CSS code.

Distance Learning Masters degree

I've been reliably informed that Bournemouth University is offering a distance learning MA degree in Creative Media Practises. It might just be for you so go check it out. Even if you don't it's a nice piece of flash.

Think before you click!

We've all done it, something embarassing that we shouldn't have. It may be falling unconscious through drink in an amusing location when we were at college, dating someone you know you shouldn't have, slagging off your tutors before your viva, or whatever. Thankfully most of those moments are just that, moments and are quickly forgotten, remembered with a slight cringe or a chuckle. Then the web came around and everything changed. Now that picture of you lying in an embarrassing heap half in a bush can be plastered all over the internet, or that raunchy competition you entered for a laugh on holiday one year can find it's way insidiously online with your name beside it... Employers are now using the all seeing power that is Google to find out about current and potential employees, it's not just those embarrassing images or dark secrets from the past that can damage your career. There has been more than one case of an employee being fired for what they have written on their blogs, and with the all pervasive power of MySpace and their ilk it seems like everyone wants to say something online, without thinking of the consequences. Not to mention dating sites - Chris Bryant (Labour MP) won't live down the picture of him in his underpants on Gaydar... And also remember that the web is not, and never has been, anonymous. In a recent case a poster to the Yahoo forums wound up libelling another member of the group, she now has to pay £10000 in damages. Ouch. As Sara mentioned too, admissions boards in the USA are now Googling prospective students, if anything bad turns up its bye bye to your application. Once it's out there, released onto the web, its there for ever and it will haunt you. Scary isn't it? Well, there are a few things you can do to change it. SEO is the way to go, you will have a hard time to make it disappear for good but you can bury it in good information about yourself. The only trouble is, even if the bad info slips off the radar it will still be lurking somewhere, on a hard drive, in a corner, just waiting... Have a read of the Times Online article yourself and feel afraid. Thankfully, my name is clean. :)

Cool Photoshop trick!

Very quick post for a VERY cool tip in Photoshop. We have all wanted to find out what that background color of a website was for a comp in photoshop. I have done screengrabs in the past, pasted them into photoshop, got the eyedropper, selected the colour... yawn! what a hassle. But there is a much better way of doing it... Check this out. Way cool! http://avalonstar.com/2006/02/06/confused-eyedropper/

Beta Testing sites

Big sites can take an age to build; they involve a lot of blood sweat and tears to go from the bright spark of an idea to realisation. A long time back I worked on a large site in Italy; it involved me going off to work in the hills of Tuscany above a small provincial city called Lucca. The six months spent there was a joy and I often wonder why I came back (don't ask, I can't answer that one!) but back I came. I still keep in contact with the people I worked with over there (hey, it means I have a place to stay when I want to have a wee holiday in Italy!) and they often ask me for feedback on work they undertake. Over the past nine months or so they have been working on a new site, a large highly dynamic site for hotels throughout Italy. I know that they have been putting in an incredible amount of time developing it; tweaking it, cursing it (as we all do when developing something new, I'm sure you'd agree) and yesterday they put it up live. It is still in beta really and needs all the minor bugs sorted out and so they let me loose on it (fools!). I put my testing hat on and dived in - I found multiple minor bugs, missing borders and the like, and a few usability issues with link colours matching text etc. All pretty easy to sort but it needs an outsider's eye to spot them, this is why it is vitally important to get someone to test your site after you have built it, preferably someone who hasn't been involved in the development. When working on such a large site for that length of time you lose perspective, you are too close to the coalface as it were and the outsiders eye can spot those glaring errors. Don't get me wrong though, the site is really quite impressive and easy to use - the actual backend is where all the magic is, a custom built PHP CMS system (have a look at the calendar, a really nice touch with the strikethroughs, and also try to go to last month). Also, a commercial site may well have to cater for people who are not tech savvy, are not designers and probably will not have upgraded their browsers with each new release. In order to cater for the widest possible user base you have to develop code with maximum browser compatibility in mind. As an aside, check out the interesting article by the Yahoo Developers team, explaining their Graded Browser Support policy. When I worked in Italy all those years ago I saw the browser stats and it was surprising to say the least. NS4 was in there at a consistently sizable 5-8% and IE5 also was around 10-12% of total visitors. Each visitor that gets a broken site is one less customer, and if you are running a business that is NOT good. So, even though it may burn your soul to do things 'the old way' it is important to remember that the site should work for your user base, not just be a showcase for your amazing web skills! Go have a look and see for yourself: www.ahotelinitaly.com Oh, and their response to my flaming of their site? "It's all gold, thanks for that" There is no negative criticism when it comes to beta testing!

Stef's blog roundup

Well, it's been an age since I've had the time to blog anything interesting, not because there is nothing to blog but because I've been too busy! I have been meaning to slip away from the NR torture chamber training room and feed you the treats I've found but not had the chance until now. So, with the sound of student screams in my ears (they are trying to get to grips with Photoshop, heh heh heh) I have eventually managed to sit down and give you, my friends, the fruits of my labours! First off, Ajax - it gets things whiter... no, sorry I meant Ajax - web 2.0 in a box! We've probably all heard of it, or at least all used it - you've seen Google maps, or Gmail, or... the list goes on. But can you write it? well, some kind soul has provided us mortals with thirty, yes thirty tutorials on Ajax, with code examples too! Thank you thank you thank you! Sizer v3.3 is a handy little windows app that lets you resize your browser. It has been about since, oooh years ago, way back when I first started all this web malarkey. Well, the new version is out with added bells and whistles. worth a look if you need to see what stuff looks like quickly on different resolutions. It's small, it's free, it's handy... what more can you ask for? Bullfighter isn't a lost matador wanting web training, nope it is another handy application that scans your word documents and flags up any corporate bullsh... *ahem* speak. Very handy for those documents that we all create from time to time for clients, colleagues etc. Think RSD declutterer! Uh oh, I hear the natives getting restless so I'd better get back in there. But not before I post probably the best link i've come across over the last few days. It is from a fellow countryman so it is obviously good (Viva Italia!), Alessandro Fulciniti of the Layout Gala has produced 40, thats four zero, css layout templates to make your life easier. they are all simple and all there! fixed, fluid, multi-column goodness. Go on Tuck in! (or I should say, Buon appetito!)

Weird Google

As the saying goes, "I never knew there was so much in it!" I've used Google for longer than I care to remember, and we all probably use it at least a billion times a day every day but there is oh, so much more to it than that sleek little interface with the "do you feel lucky, punk?" button. During a discussion on interface design yesterday, one of our acolytes stepped forth and, heresy of heresies, mentioned that there was a 'dark side' to Google that doesn't see the light of day. We of course flogged him and fed him to the NR piranhas as is fitting but I must admit to being piqued. He was right, so thanks James (sorry about the piranhas). I feel that I too have to share the interesting little titbits with you: Klingon Google 1337 Google mini interface Google Linux Google Mac Google Google Easter Game Google Valentine ... I suppose they have to do something with all that money. :P

Wordpress on a stick

Its a bit like having the moon on a stick but different. Wordpress is a professional blogging tool, essentially it is a content management system created in PHP and MySQL like text pattern and it is pretty powerful. Given that USB pen drives have gotten bigger and cheaper over the course of time (like so many things computer related) it is now easy to have all your applications stored on it. But why have a CMS installed on a pen drive? well, it means you can showcase your CMS driven masterpiece to anyone, just pop the drive into a computers USB port and away you go, or you could even work on your own website while at work... Not that I'd condone this kind of thing you understand! There is a good article on doing just this; it even shows you how to install the whole package on the stick (Apache/MySQL/PHP). You'll need at least 256mb but given that it is pretty cheap that shouldn't be a problem.

Firefox extensions roundup

Firefox, our favourite internet friend, has many extensions that make it more useful than a Swiss army knife. The only trouble is that there are so many of them it is often almost impossible to choose which ones to use. I have spent quite a while trawling through the extensions on the mozdev site, ooh-ing and aah-ing at all the lush things squirreled away in there. My Firefox might not be modded to the max but it's not far off... The pchere blog has collected what he thinks is the 50 essential Firefox extensions, the site might leave lots to be desired regarding its design (or lack of it) but the fifty extensions are actually quite good. I already have many of them installed in my own browser (smug grin) but you might not have had the pleasure of using such treats as bug me not, colour tabs, session saver and the rest but from this one site you too can power your browsing experience. A word of warning though, session saver is a really handy extension but don't get lazy with it like I did. Remember to bookmark/Del.icio.us your pages if you want to keep them or you might just loose them (like I did this morning), its a great tool for recovering from crashes but you will be wailing and gnashing your teeth if for whatever reason you loose those 'essential' pages you had open in tabs!

Whats in a word?

Ajax, our friendly web 2.0 friend has many innovative and funky uses, from google maps to basecamp and all points in between. I've just come across another interesting implementation of it and felt that I just had to share: dictionary.hm is as the name suggests an online dictionary that gives a definition as you type. Very clever and very cool. :)

Invisible Web

This great big wonderful web is bigger than Net Resources (yes, I know it comes as a surprise), its even bigger than Google! By some estimates its five hundred times bigger than Google. Now, considering that the afore mentioned search engine indexes approximately eight billion pages that makes for an awful lot of information that is not easily viewable. It's a bit like an information iceberg. So what is down there, under the surface lurking and waiting? lots of 'real' information. Primary sources rather than the tin-foil hattery of the brash and commercial surface - academic papers, historical documents, lots. I mentioned this to our resident information ninja who nodded wisely and talked about the arcane academic search engines (yep, there are literally gazillions of specialist search engines out there) that allowed him to attain his black belt in physics. And that is where lots of the deep web lives, held in hard to get at academic databases, library indexes and the like. It's not that they are hidden or locked out for normal users, it's just that its harder to tap into unless you know how. One of the ways of digging deep is to use the word database in your query. This will flag up some interesting results but it might not be quite refined enough, if not then you might want to use one of the many 'portals' to get you right into the thickest seams of raw data - and this is where it gets really useful. No more "billy-bobs guide to everything" because now you can get to the real information that everyone says the web is about. Happy fishing in the deep, rich waters of the deep web! What not to do in web design...

While checking out a really good tutorial site for the students (thanks Roan) I came across the site from hell. after laughing so hard I nearly fell off my seat I felt that I had to post it for your amusement too. See if you can spot the subliminal message. I was sure it was a student site... :P The link to this is from another really informative site, it has lots of html/css stuff to read through, and he's quite amusing too. (did I mention he works for Yahoo? - Damn, I'm starting to rhyme again! where's my medication...)

Security, it's a big concern for all of us. From the simple "did I lock my front door this morning?" to the airport pat down. In todays world the constant worry is how secure things are. But what about your web server? How secure is it actually? well, with the power invested in you by google you can find out. Our servers are secured with the services of five demon princes from the lower levels of Hell™ (an NR student exchange program) but it's surprising what you can find with a little google knowledge... Passwords, access to site databases and much much more is available if you only look. Now, this is not an excuse to try and do some hacking, for a start you will probably get a visit from the MIB if you try to do anything naughty BUT it is a good way to ensure that other people can't go poking about in the innards of your site. It is a nice simple primer and well worth a read, by running through the list of google tests you can relax knowing that you haven't left your front door open! Go have a read of the ethical hacker and then look at johnny's site. Scary huh?
