Optimising images for the web

Posted by Roan Lavery

With the rapid uptake of broadband over the last few years, it may seem like a minor issue, but optimising your images for the web is still an important part of streamlining the user experience for your visitors.

I just found this interesting little article which covers all the basic points you need to know when putting graphics on websites. It might be old ground for a lot of us, but it’s an excellent primer for beginners.

I especially like the comparison table at the bottom which shows how the different graphic formats like jpg, gif and png deal with different sorts of images, complete with example file sizes. Quite illuminating.

personally cannot wait for transparent png support in IE 7, using css and javascript hacks to get your new, shiny page working in IE 6 et al. is a right royal pain in the bumski!
