PHP is an open source scripting language designed for building dynamic websites. It integrates easily with the popular MySQL database.

MySQL is an open source software relational database management system (RDBMS) which uses SQL (Structured Query Language).

PHP & MySQL are designed to work together, allowing you to build data driven websites.

Introduction to PHP

  • PHP language syntax
  • Data Structures; variables and arrays
  • Functions; core and user defined
  • Logical operators; if, else, while, switch
  • Superglobal arrays
  • Software engineering principals
  • Processing user input data from query strings in URLs and from forms
  • Data input validation
  • An introduction to OOP (Object Oriented Programming)

Introduction to MySQL

  • The basics of SQL (Structured Query Language)
  • Building a database structure
  • Building referential integrity into your database with foreign key relationships
  • Populating a database, (insert, alter, delete commands)
  • Selectively querying a database (select command)
  • Searching the database

Skills Gained

  • A complete understanding of all the core command words and syntax of the PHP language
  • The ability to write basic PHP code to display and manage data
  • The knowledge of to use the main PHP functions, and write your own
  • Basic software engineering principals to allow you to write clean, portable code
  • How to use MySQL to build and manage data
  • How to use phpmyadmin to manage a MySQL database
  • How to integrate PHP and MySQL to build a managed data structure

PHP and MySQL

  • The set up of a local webserver for code development using WAMP
  • Using PHP and MySQL together; building an example data structure which can be displayed and managed by a back end content management system (CMS)
  • Applying user access protection to the CMS
  • Integrating a gallery into the CMS
  • Using clean URLs
  • Building a website template with PHP
  • A brief overview of how to use PHP/MySQL packages; e.g. phpBB (a forum) and MODx (a CMS which allows the writing of your own PHP modules to extend it's functionaility)
