Interconnect
What we did
Interconnect is a three year project that aims to develop a Scottish network for women students studying science, engineering, technology and built environment subjects. Funded by the Scottish Funding Council, the project has been developed by the Scottish Resource Centre of Women in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) at Edinburgh Napier University.
The Interconnect network hopes to raise visibility of women in these industries and to provide the space, both online and off, for students to meet colleagues, employers and professional women to gain good career guidance and support.
It also hopes members will engage with STEM as ambassadors to younger students acting as positive role models and to promote core SET subjects.
We were asked by Interconnect to firstly give shape to the new brand and then to design and develop a site that would engage with their core audience of students (aged 16 - 24), professional women and potential employers. The key aim would be to provide an online portal of information, events, assistance and most specifically a place to enable groups of students to self-form throughout the country, growing and expanding the network.
Our solution to the meeting the online community ambition of the project was to integrate Facebook as a doorway into the site as the mechanism to facilitate multiple group formations.
The site itself will encourage and support individual groups' activities, promote regional and national group opportunities and bring the whole network together through events, training, career support, and access to employers and professional women in these industries.
The site was built in the MODx CMS with bespoke back-end development to integrate access seamlessly through Facebook. Site structure and content are fully modifiable by the Interconnect team based at Napier and will provide a flexible platform for group management, case studies, career advice and event planning.
As Interconnect looks forward to securing funding and sponsorship from industry for their activities beyond the first three years, the site will help them to achieve this by growing the network of individuals, organisations and employers who are actively engaged in realising the immense potential of women studying and working in science, engineering and technology in Scotland today.
