The Botanics - New Home Page
What we did
We first created a new site for the RBGE in 2008 which was a great success and has grown from an original size of about 200 pages to more than 900 at present.
In 2010 we were asked to look at refreshing the Home page to give it a more contemporary feel, adding in new social networking features and focusing on new developments within the gardens.
The RBGE wanted the site to have more ‘breathing space', but it also had to promote many more site areas and introduce a wider range of content including visitor information, John Hope Discovery Centre, more news, more events, the online shop, and encourage membership.
We started by addressing issues with the top banner, reducing top menu choices, expanding the main menu navigation and isolating the Buy Online button. We also applied a soft green palette to both footer and header and stretched the page size from 720 to 960 pixels
A sense of space was achieved by adding padding around the nav bar and introducing a scrolling news stream of green text on a white background, follwed by icon links to the key RBGE social networking sites; Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr for greater prominence.
The main content sections were prioritised in consultation with the RBGE and to accommodate all the new addtions we deployed a mid-level 2 column layout, succeeded by a 4-coulum lower level.
Seeing the final result the RBGE then decided that we should complete a site wide widening to maintain consistency with the home page. New CSS templates were created and finally a full MODx CMS upgrade was carried out to facilitate ongoing and future work.
