What we did

  • The Scottish Tartans Authority is the preeminent international membership organisation for individuals, manufacturers, retailers, educators and cultural institutions involved in the history, design, weaving and wearing of tartan.

Formed in 1996 by Scotland's leading weavers and tartan retailers, and run by Director Brian Wilton, it is closely aligned to the International Association of Tartan Studies (IATA) and the Tartan Educational and Cultural Association (TECA).

  • The STA's major work is to promote a deeper knowledge of Scottish tartans, their origins, manufacture, use, history and development.

Key to this is their work compiling and maintaining the International Tartan Index, recording and documenting all known historical and modern tartans and providing access to this information through their website.

  • The Tartans Authority's original site was primarily text based with information aimed at manufacturing and retail members. As the membership grew and expanded, the STA needed to revamp its web presence to engage with new audiences and deliver a richer and more varied amount of content and services.

We developed a new site architecture and framework and then worked with the STA's designers, Vested Interest, to create a home page design giving flexibility and scalability in all areas of the site.

  • The site is built in the MODx cms allowing the STA to change all content; text, images, banners, advertisements and links across the site. A new membership module was created in MODx enabling online subscription and payment, and a redesigned Tartan Ferret gives users the ability to search for a tartan by name, number, clan or colours.

If you haven't got one, you can create your own tartan (and register it) with the online tartan designer tool.

  • With members across the globe, the new site hopes to deliver an ever expanding resource of information, images and data to encourage new interest in all things tartan.

Later in 2010 will see the addition of new Business Directory, Digital Downloads with additional video and audio content.
