The University of Edinburgh – The School of Mathematics
Mathematics has been studied at the University of Edinburgh from its very foundation in 1583 and the School of Maths continues to have an outstanding reputation in delivering undergraduate and postgraduate education. Rated 5* in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, it offers degrees in Mathematics (both Pure and Applied), Statistics and Operational Research as well as joint degrees with Artificial Intelligence, Business Studies, Computer Science, Economics, Linguistics, Music, Philosophy and Physics.
The School is based in The King's Buildings, just outside the city centre of Edinburgh, and houses over 50 academics, 30 research students and related staff. In any one year, the School sees 2000 students attending undergraduate courses and runs three MSc courses.
For the fall term of 2007 we were asked by the School to re-design their site to give it a more dynamic feel and functionality. It was particularly important that the site delivered an easy-to-use and maintainable platform for students, teachers and staff communication, ideally within an open source CMS. Critical to the site build was the ability to link and integrate secure login access for all users to multiple databases and University systems behind the scenes. As a result, we chose to deploy the PHP web framework, Symfony. This has enabled us to meet their content management, user authentication and administration requirements fully, and give the School a flexible framework to grow on.
